The ’77 Show

This was a piece I submitted for a group art show themed on the year 1977.  Leave it to me to make a dreary piece for a happy show and find humor in more serious work.  I titled this “The Execution of Gary Gilmore”.  In 1977 Gary Gilmore was executed by firing squad for armed robbery, assault, and two counts of murder.  This event was controversial given that it was the first time in over a decade that the death penalty was put into action after the court decision in Furman v. Georgia deemed the death penalty unconstitutional. In eerie coincidence, not only does this dude have the same first name as me, (in a spooky voice) but we have the same birthday! OOOOooooOOOOOOoooooo. He is often remembered for his famous last words: “Let’s do this.” which would later be altered and used as NIKE’s famous slogan “Just do it!”  Good job NIKE for turning lemons to lemonade.
